That circulation does three jobs at once: it cools the drill bit under continuous friction, carries cuttings out of the hole so they don't recirculate and re-clog the bit, and applies enough hydrostatic pressure to keep loose or unstable formations from collapsing in on the drill string mid-operation. Get the flow rate or discharge pressure wrong relative to your hole depth and diameter, and all three functions degrade simultaneously — which is why pump selection deserves the same engineering attention as the rig itself, not a same-spec swap from whichever drilling mud pump supplier quotes the lowest price.
