Photovoltaic Drilling Rig
A photovoltaic drilling rig — also known as a solar pile driver, solar piling rig, or PV pile drilling machine — is a purpose-built hydraulic construction machine designed to install the foundation piles and structural supports for photovoltaic (solar panel) mounting systems at solar power stations. Unlike general-purpose engineering drilling rigs, photovoltaic drilling rigs are specifically engineered for the high-volume, high-speed pile installation demands of large-scale solar farm construction, where hundreds or thousands of foundation piles must be accurately installed across a project site in the shortest possible time.
Solar power station construction requires the installation of large numbers of steel piles — typically ground screws (helical piles), steel H-piles, or tubular steel piles — at precise spacings, depths, and vertical alignments to support the solar panel mounting structures. On sites with rock at shallow depth, direct pile driving is impractical, requiring pre-drilling before pile placement. JCDRILL's photovoltaic drilling rigs support all three principal foundation methods: direct screw pile installation in soil, auger pre-drilling in medium ground, and DTH hammer pre-drilling in rock — from a single machine with tooling configuration changes.
JCDRILL manufactures a comprehensive range of full hydraulic crawler-mounted photovoltaic drilling rigs in configurations optimized for flat utility-scale solar farms, hillside solar installations, agrivoltaic projects, and solar farms on difficult terrain with mixed soil-rock conditions.
High-Torque Hydraulic Top-Drive Power Head JCDRILL PV drilling rigs use hydraulic top-drive power heads delivering up to 3,500 N·m of output torque for ground screw installation in dense soil and auger drilling in medium-hard ground. The stepless hydraulic torque control allows the operator to set maximum torque limits to protect the ground screw from over-torque damage during installation — a critical feature for maintaining pile integrity in variable ground.
360° Full-Rotation Mast Positioning The mast mounting turret rotates through a full 360°, allowing the rig to align the pile drive axis with the next pile position without moving the crawler. At typical solar farm pile spacings of 3m–6m, the rig can install multiple piles in a pattern from a single crawler position, dramatically reducing crawler travel time and boosting pile-per-shift productivity.
Hydraulic Platform Leveling System JCDRILL's photovoltaic drilling rigs feature four-point active hydraulic leveling on the crawler platform — automatically compensating for ground slope to maintain the mast in vertical alignment for each pile position. On hillside sites, this eliminates the need to build level working pads at each pile location, a major productivity and cost benefit.
Automatic Pile Feed and Clamp System The pile holder and rotary clamp system accepts ground screws and steel piles and grips them securely for rotation during installation. The hydraulic clamp releases instantly when the pile reaches design depth, allowing fast changeover to the next pile without manual uncoupling. For common pile sizes, the changeover from one pile to the next takes under two minutes.
Fast Crawler Travel Between Positions JCDRILL PV drilling rigs are designed for fast inter-position travel — crawler speeds of 2.5–4.0 km/h allow the rig to traverse a 6m pile spacing in under 10 seconds at full travel speed. Over a full shift on a large solar farm, minimizing travel time between pile positions has a significant impact on total pile installation count.
Multi-Method Tooling Compatibility All JCDRILL photovoltaic drilling rigs accept ground screw drive adapters, continuous flight augers, short auger bits, DTH hammer and drill pipes, and large-diameter rotary tools through standardized hydraulic chuck connections. The tooling change between ground screw and auger modes typically requires 15–20 minutes; between auger and DTH modes, approximately 30 minutes including air compressor connection.
Wide-Track Crawler for Soft Ground and Slopes Solar farms are commonly constructed on agricultural land, hillsides, and disturbed ground where ground-bearing capacity may be limited. JCDRILL's wide-track crawler undercarriages distribute the rig's weight over a large footprint, minimizing ground disturbance and preventing bogging on soft or wet ground conditions — important for maintaining site access and minimizing environmental impact.
Remote Control Crawler Option For hillside solar farm construction where the rig operator manages the machine from a distance for safety on steep terrain, JCDRILL offers remote-controlled crawler travel on selected PV rig models. The operator can position the rig remotely before engaging manual pile installation controls from the cab.
Integrated Hammer Oiler and Air Connection (DTH Mode) When configured for DTH rock pre-drilling, JCDRILL PV rigs include an integrated hammer oiler and standardized air compressor connection point. This eliminates field fabrication of air line connections and ensures consistent hammer lubrication for maximum hammer service life in sustained rock drilling operations.
Determine the Dominant Ground Condition If the site is predominantly soft to medium soil (SPT N-value under 30), the JCV-130 is the most productive and cost-effective choice. If the site includes significant areas of medium-hard ground (N-value 30–50) or weathered rock, specify the JCV-200. For sites with hard rock (granite, basalt) as the dominant condition, specify the JCV-350 with matched air compressor.
Assess Site Terrain For flat or gently sloping sites (under 15° gradient), standard JCV-130 or JCV-200 crawler rigs are appropriate. For hillside sites with sustained gradients of 15°–45°, specify the JCV-SLOPE with active leveling and wide-track crawler.
Calculate Required Pile-Per-Shift Productivity Estimate the total pile count and construction schedule, then calculate required daily pile installation rate. Soft ground direct screw: JCV-130 or JCV-200, 40–80 piles/shift. Mixed ground with some auger pre-drilling: JCV-200, 20–50 piles/shift. Rock DTH pre-drilling: JCV-350, 15–30 holes/shift depending on depth and rock hardness.
Confirm Pile Diameter and Length Verify the pile manufacturer's recommended drive system and match to JCDRILL rig tooling compatibility. Ground screw outer diameters from 60mm to 300mm are covered across the JCDRILL PV rig range. For larger diameter anchor piles (300mm–400mm), specify the JCV-350.
Consider Multi-Site Fleet Requirements For EPC contractors operating multiple simultaneous solar farm construction sites, JCDRILL offers fleet pricing on multi-unit orders and can supply matched air compressor units, spare parts packages, and tooling sets for each rig in the fleet.
Purpose-Built for Solar Construction — Not Generic Engineering Rigs JCDRILL designs its photovoltaic drilling rigs around the specific productivity, accuracy, and terrain demands of solar farm pile installation — not simply adapted anchor drilling rigs with PV branding. The 360° mast rotation, active leveling, fast inter-position travel, and multi-method tooling compatibility reflect the actual construction challenges of large-scale solar farm EPC projects.
Complete PV Foundation Equipment from One Manufacturer JCDRILL can supply the complete photovoltaic foundation construction equipment package from a single source: photovoltaic drilling rig, matched air compressor, ground screw drive tooling, auger tooling, DTH hammer and bits, and spare parts. Single-source supply simplifies procurement and provides unified technical support for all components.
Factory-Direct Pricing from Beijing, China As a direct manufacturer, JCDRILL supplies photovoltaic drilling rigs at factory prices without distributor markup. For large fleet procurement on major solar farm projects, factory-direct pricing provides a significant cost advantage over third-party sourced equipment.
